- Introducing David Abrams
- Video Clip
- Reflection
When studying the Holocaust in a classroom, facts are presented. These facts usually discuss the horrifying actions that the Germans made towards Jewish citizens. Seldom is there discussion of the acts of kindness that took place during the Holocaust. It is for this reason that David Abram’s testimony effected me. When posed the question, “Did you ever see anyone steal?” he responded no, but instead he shared a story from that time about a friendship he had made at the camp. This alone effected me, as whenever we discussed the concentration camps, I would imagine what it would have been like if I were there, and I always pictured myself alone. It was nice to be able to change that image into me having a friend to lean on. David and his friend made a pact to always share. Whatever it was, food, clothes, information, they would split everything 50/50. Not only is this a testimate to true friendship, but it sheds light on the fact that not everyone involved in the Holocaust was focused on their own well being, but like David and his friend, some were also worried about the well being of others.

"A new theory was presented and it stated that us human beings are descended from apes. Sir Richard Owen, an anatomist, did not like this theory, and he argued that the hippocampus minor lobe of the human brain was unique to any other brain. This would mean that our species was superior to any other. He believed this because he was not able to find the hippocampus minor lobe in any ape brains. Thomas Huxley argued that there was a hippocampus minor in an ape brain and that Owen had simply missed it. In 1861, this debate was all the rage." - Genome Summary Chapter 2
