Fibonacci Sequence
REFLECTION:
At the beginning of this project I was intimidated by the seemingly complex nature of the Fibonacci Sequence. I had never studied it before, so it was completely new to me. I was overwhelmed by the amount of possibilities. After choosing my outlining shape, things began to make more sense. In order to keep things as symmetrical as possible, I decided to divide each side of my shape in three equal parts. This, to my surprise, would result in a very complex design. It even created the outlining shape in the center of the final product. At first I was confused and overwhelmed, but once I began with the hands on work, I really enjoyed myself and this project.
WHAT IS THE FIBONACCI SEQUENCE?
The Fibonacci Sequence is a series of numbers in which each number is the sum of the two numbers that come before it. The simplest example is the series 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
It's importance in math is that it has many interesting and mysterious relationships with nature. For instance, the number of petals on most types of flowers is usually a number that can be found in the Fibonacci sequence.
HOW CAN IT BE USED TO CREATE AN OPTICAL ILLUSION?
The tiny seeds produced at the center of a sunflower are an example of an optical illusion. When it is exactly in position, two different spirals will appear; one going left and another going right. Because of the time lapse of each of the seeds in the center, the seed spirals of the sunflower correspond with the Fibonacci Sequence.
